Exposures of Concern

A number of different substances are known to be neurotoxicants. The following is a short list of those that are known to disrupt brain development in young lab animals and children:

  • Metals, such as lead, methyl mercury, cadmium
  • Pesticides, especially the organophosphate (OP) and organochlorine insecticides
  • Persistent organic pollutants (POPs), such as PCBs and dioxins
  • Solvents (including ethanol and those used in various cleaning products)

We will discuss in detail the first three of these categories of neurotoxic substances.
